Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is the latest and most innovate way that people are using to rejuvenate their skin, specifically against signs of aging and scarring. By using the patient’s own blood to revitalize tired-looking skin, this therapy is fast becoming one of the most popular forms of anti-aging treatment, boosted by its use by high profile celebrities.
The process of creating the platelet-rich plasma is fairly simple. Blood is made up of 4 major components –white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets, and plasma. When blood is spun in a centrifuge it results in the platelets and plasma being separated out, thus making them usable in PRP Therapy. Once the PRP has been extracted it can be injected into the desired portion of skin, improving appearance and reducing wrinkles, scarring and other signs of wear and tear. The stem cells found in the PRP are known to greatly increase the growth of fresh skin molecules which stimulates regeneration.
This simple process is being used to cure damage to the skin worldwide but has also been noted to improve deeper issues.
What is the treatment process?
Initially, a numbing cream is applied to the area of skin that will be receiving the treatment. A small amount of blood (10-20ml) is taken from the arm and taken to the centrifuge. This sterile environment has been specially designed to get the most out of the blood, reducing the amount of blood that needs to be drawn. Once this platelet rich plasma has been separated it is re-injected into the problem area, initializing regrowth and rejuvenation of the skin.
The overall process takes less than an hour and at least 10 minutes of this is the blood being processed in the centrifuge.
How quickly will you see results?
On average results will start to show after around 2-3 months with monthly treatments. A minimum of three treatments is usually advised however in some cases up to six treatments will be required on a monthly basis. As it is an accumulative treatment the results will be greater if the full three treatments are taken.
The effects of rejuvenation on the skin will continue for up to 12 months after one treatment reducing the need for repeat appointments.
Who can’t have PRP Therapy?
It is advised that ladies who are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding do not undertake this treatment. Also those on anticoagulants, have suffered from cancer or have an autoimmune condition are not advised to try this therapy. It is also ill-advised to undertake this treatment on an area of skin that has certain implants. A full medical history should be looked at before treatment is approved.
